KB's new shoes

Carrying on a tradition she started with my BIL.... Nouna took us to Stride Rite today, and bought KB her first official pair of walking shoes!! And the great thing is... KB will actually walk in them!! They are not soft-soled... but are super flexible - as they are made to mimic barefoot walking and give babies the flexible stride path and natural propulsion they need to grow into strong walkers... they are *super* cute on her!!

Awesome!

OMW! This is awesome! ~ After having our first McCain sign vandalized.... and our "Yes on 2" (marriage amendment) sign stolen... I can so totally feel this guys sentiment!!
LoL - I LOVE it!

Final (disappointing) Best Buy Update...

Best Buy just called.... it's a no go. :-( They said "all our applications have been filled." Interestingly enough, they did ask him if they could keep his application open through the holidays (they usually only keep them for 30days).... but unfortunately, we don't have time to wait around... so it's on to other things. B says he's ok... but he's being very quiet, which is what he does when he's upset or concerned about something. I know providing for /taking care of us, is his utmost concern... and he's really feeling disheartened right now. Please pray that God will make whatever path we need to take next, very clear. Thank you!

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD,
"plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11

On a lighter note... I have to say I have the greatest two best friends in the entire world. Within mere minutes of hearing things didn't work out with the job today, I got very heartfelt messages/calls from both of them... checking on us, and assuring me that if there is anything they can do, or anything we need... esp anything that might help lessen our worries right now... to please let them know!! I also have received amazing support, love & prayers from my family. It's because of them, I know we are going to be ok, and can make it through this!!

Amazingly Delicious Whole-Grain Brownies

I was seriously craving brownies tonight, so I decided to try this recipe (with a few minor changes - denoted in GREEN) ... and OMW! They were*So* delicious!!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup applesauce (I used homemade, which was already slightly sweetened)
  • 3/4 cup white sugar (For a healthier alternative, I used 1/3 cup honey + 1½Tbs of sugar)
  • 2 egg whites (I used flax... 1¾ Tbs + 5 Tbs water)
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted (this can be interchanged with oil, if you wish)
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk (If you don't have buttermilk, you can always use ¼ milk + ¼ tsp vinegar or lemon juice...)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon coffee flavored extract (I actually used coffee grounds, & it worked fine)
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (I omitted this, and doubled the whole wheat flour)
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional - I used mini chocolate chips)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional - I didn't do this!)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Grease an 8x8 inch square pan.
  3. In a medium bowl, stir together the applesauce, white sugar (honey/sugar), egg whites (flax), and butter until smooth. Mix in the buttermilk, vanilla extract and coffee.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa, flours, baking powder and salt;
  5. Combine into the sugar mixture, just until incorporated.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the brownies look like they are pulling away from the sides.
  8. Cool, and cut into squares.
**Note - due to the flax seed and other substitiutions - this recipe makes more of a dense, flat brownie, rather than a fluffy, cake-like brownie... **

Best Buy update..

Well, after calling and leaving a message Monday... calling and getting no answer yesterday (literally - the phone just rang & rang for like 3 mins).... DH finally stopped in there today, and got to talk to someone! Apparently there was a misunderstanding, and the "We'll let you know be the weekend" was referring to the next weekend (this coming one, now). The hiring gal says she has a few more interviews to do, and some "hard decisions to make".... so, though we have no real answers as to his employee status.... it's nice to know, it's not over yet!!

So the wait continues... KEEP PRAYING!!

What did you say?

"Watch what you say: for you never know who is listening."

I know, I know... it's one thing to say... it's another, to actually do. Matter of fact, it's can even be quite easy to emulate & adhere to, when you are out & about under other people's watchful eye.... But what about when you're at home? It is said: "Character is what we do when no one is watching." - Do your attitudes & character differ between one or the other, just because "no one" is watching? Do you treat your children, spouse, parents, siblings with the same respect at home as you do when you're not. Just something to think about....

Today I had this lesson happen to me first hand....
and boy what a wakeup call that was!
As KB and I settle in to eat lunch, I suddenly notice my phone's display blinking. "That's odd!" I think to myself.... so I set in to do some investigative work. Then it hits me! about 5 mins 7 secs previous, KB had been holding my phone... and in pressing buttons, apparently called someone in my contacts. Then I started thinking... what did that person hear in those 5+ mins? Sometime in there, may have been when KB was begging me a bite of lunch.... as I tried to stall her until the food cooled down, did I let myself get at all irritated towards her? Did B ask me anything during that time? How was my attitude with him? Wow.... though I know the person on the other line is a very understanding & forgiving person (thankfully!)... the sudden realization of what was & (even worse), could have been heard, was very humbling...

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." ~ Psalms 19:14

The Simple Women's Daybook

For today, since I was unable to get it done yesterday....

For Today... October 28, 2008

Outside my Window... It's *cold*!! I don't believe it has gotten any warmer than 65° all day!! (which is very unusual for FL... let alone October!!) - It's wonderful! ~ The sun is shining... the wind is blowing... there's not a cloud in the sky... and there's a pair of brown squirrels chasing each other on the wooden fence... it's truly paradise!!

I am remembering . . . Fun times in the "good ol' days"... they sure did go by fast!

I am thankful for... Hubby feeling better today -- FIL who just stopped by, to (finally) fix my dryer!!!

I am thinking... How awesome is the color Vanessa picked for our bridesmaids dresses... and how much fun it's going to be choosing one (style)!!!!
I am wearing... Flannel pants & teal t-shirt, under my plaid apron... barefeet (though I am actually considering going and putting some socks on!)... hair [partially] pulled back in a clip.

I am reading... my script for the church Christmas play (yup, it's a work in progress).... Various music books (I just got the music schedule for this month, and I am on for two choir pieces & three weeks [in a row] of offertories, starting next Sunday).... text messages (I luv my equally addicted, text-a-holic friends!)

From the kitchen... Warming the chicken [broth/noodles] soup I made yesterday... so I can add the chicken & some veggies! I also feel like making bread or rolls or something warm like that... I think I will also go make myself some hot tea!

I am hoping/praying... we hear something back from Best Buy soon... or hubby can find some other work, soon!

I am creating...

I am hearing... KB playing with her lion stacking toy behind me.. Hubby talking on the phone... and the clanking in the garage, of my FIL fixing my dryer!

One of my favorite things... My clothesline!! ~ I am so glad I have had it through all this time, my dryer has been absent!!

Around the house... It got pretty well cleaned, over the weekend... so other than slow process of the seemingly never-ending laundry.... it's not too bad.... just a few random things need picking up.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week... Well, I thought this week was looking pretty uneventful.... but now it seems as if it's out to prove me wrong! (and that's not necessarily a good thing).

As normal, we have church on Wednesday evening (but I think we have a missionary coming, which is different!)... We will also be attending a funeral/service for Delvis, sometime this week.... (edit: just found out the funeral in on Thursday morning)....
We also possibly, have another funeral to go to, later in the week/weekend. It's for an evangelist friend of my husband's family... (Ok people!! I know they say these things come in threes... but *please* no one else die to make that true, and our week busier... k???)

I can't believe how many conservatives - out of leeriness of voting for "the lesser of two evils" - are planning to vote for a 3rd party.... thereby dividing the Republican base & giving Obama a clear path to Washington. - It really makes me SICK to even think about! -- Come on people.... use your heads... THINK!!!

A rollercoaster weekend...

And no, unfortunately we didn't visit any amusement parks this weekend. The rollercoaster I am talking about, is referring to a roller coaster of emotion... and I boy am glad to get off! (well hopefully. The weekend is over... and hopefully the emotions will go with it!) Here's a map of what our weekend looked like....

Boarded the rollercoaster on Friday afternoon... after B had a great interview, and seemed hopeful in the response....

Up - Got to watch little miss Zoe on Friday... make a little extra $$... and get a small (yet tiring) glimpse of what it's like to be a mommy to twins! (whew!)

Down - Best Buy: We're still haven't heard anything... but are trying to wait patiently. Since they said we'd hear from them "sometime this weekend"... If we still haven't heard anything by noon tomorrow, B's going to call them...

Up - Teens in Training: We had an awesome youth event on Friday night... a county-wide treasure/scavenger hunt! There were five teams, each with 3-4 teens and two leaders. We had a list of challenges to do (like gather & return 12 carts at a store... or buy & drink a milkshake at Big Olaf's, or buy/sign/hand deliver a greeting card to one of the team's parents...) , as well as a list of items to collect (napkin, a turkey or ham for Hope Children's Home, a pumpkin, a screw from Lowes or Home Depot, and many more.). Unfortunately, there were also some catches... only one thing could be done or purchased per location.... and the teens and one leader had to stay together at all times. B and I were on a team of three *energetic* young men... and by the time it was done, I was *exhausted*! Since B was the driver, and we had KB... there were lots of times, it was easiest to just leave them in the van, as I follow (run /chase/yell at/corral/etc) after the guys. In the end, we completed all the challenges... manged to collect everything except for the Little Caesars Pizza box & live frog. (couldn't find one, and it costs $30-50 to buy one... crazy!)... got all five bonuses (any time we completed a challenge, we would text a picture to Pastor Dan, who would then send up a picture clue as to where a bonus might be. And at each spot, there were only four plates for five teams.)... and only lost to the first place team, by 28¢ (because we didn't grab the recipet from the chocolate milk... darn!). It was tiring but extremely fun!

Big Drop Down - Church: I found out that a very special and influential young man from our church was killed (shot multiple times) while pumping gas at a local statin on Friday afternoon. The police believe it was an attempted car-jacking. Delvis first came to church in our bus ministry... as a very rough boy. There were many times, where our church workers could have decided to take the "easy" route, and give up on him... but they never did. As a result, Delvis got saved... made an amazing life turn-around, and used his testimony to lead *many* to the Lord... including 50 of the 53 young people he brought to the church, and most of his high school football team. Delvis continued to serve as one of the teen-aged leaders in our youth group as well as the bus ministry, until he graduated & joined the Marine reserves... for which he served eight months in Iraq. Through the years, he has touched/influenced/changed so many lives through his [way too short] life. Needless to say, much of the congregation was really emotional this morning. Though we know D is in a better place... he was a big part of our church family... and it's still REALLY hard to have him gone ~ RIP Delvis (10.24.08) - Though we know you're in a better place, you will be greatly missed!!!

Up - Family time: Though money is really tight right now (and getting more so by each day)... B picked up an extra side job (a quick computer fix for someone at church).... just so he could take us to out for some long overdue family time. We went to the movies (morning $5 tickets are an awesome thing) & then grabbed some lunch at the mall... which included some much needed heart to heart conversation. <3

Up & Down - Bittersweet goodbyes: Our good friend JAmes left today, to "officially" make his move to Southern California. He came by last night, for a final goodbye,.. and we had a lovely [lengthy] visit, filled with smiles, laughter, fond memories revisited, KB-centric fun & love, and his awesome bear hugs! -- While it comforting to know he already has plans to come back, and come back often (the company's corporate office is here... as well as his family.)... it's certainly isn't easy to see him go!

Up - We had gorgeous weather today, where we actaully got to wear long sleeves for a good part of the day.... and I hear it's supposed to be even a little colder tomorrow!! yay!!

Up - Servant Appreciation Day: Yearly, our church has a servant appreciation day, where they recognize everyone who serves in the ministry with a small token of their appreciation (this year it was a cool leather pocket calendar & notepad)... have someone from each ministry come up and give a testimony.... and show a picture video. This year, B made the video (poor thing was up until 2am last night getting it finished)... and also gave a testimony for the Class-A ministry we are involved in on Sunday mornings. I also had the honor of playing "Old Rugged Cross" for Mr Lanny & his lovely wife, Shari as special music!

The Grand Finale: I wasn't feeling too great most of tonight... :-( ~ KB was being a huge stinker during church... and though training during church tends to be my area of responsibility... B was wonderful, and took over completely for me - I didn't even tell him I wasn't feeling good or anything.... but I was very grateful! ~ After church, we went over to Nouna's house for some delicious Chili with her & the inlaws- and even tried to enjoy the ball game. (I say "tried" because Rays lost again! - stink!). All in all, we had a nice visit... that is, until the end.... Then all h-e-double-hockey-sticks broke loose. First sweet SIL got upset over something, which [unfortunately] I know all too well about - and was yet the third or fourth person to cry on me today... And then, to top it all off... DH seems to have caught some sort of stomach bug.. which has had a very unpleasent outcome!! :-( Talk about a perfect ending to such a crazy weekend... huh? - Heh. (:rolls eyes:)

Interview update...

Well... he went in for the 2nd interview and feels *really* comfortabe/good with the way everything played out. They told him they'd call sometime this weekend, maybe as early as tonight with their answer. So far we haven't heard anything, and it's already after hours... so we can only hope we hear something tomorrow! Thanx for you T&P's... and keep 'em coming, this isn't over yet!

For the protection of our children
our families, & our country...
I am PROUD to be a....

DH's interview...

B had his interview today. Everything went really well. Most of the business type questions he felt pretty confident on.. and he did "not so bad" on the music-related ones. He said he was nervous... and now, looking back back in retrospect, there are some questions he probably could have answered better... but it wasn't too bad. They are supposed to call him tonight with their decision.

Edit (9:30pm) They must have liked him... because they just called, and asked him to come back tomorrow morning (at 11:30am), for an interview with the general manager!! Yay!!

So, Please keep praying!!! - They are being heard & are greatly appreciated!!
Isn't it interesting how a song that you've sung maybe even hundreds of times, can suddenly jump out at your with a whole new world of meaning? A dear friend recently found comfort in this hymn, and posted the lyrics on her blog. With life circumstances as they've been - and even some as they currently are... it really blessed me. It's a precious reminder that no matter what happens.. or what life throws your way... you can always count on the Lord to help you through.
"Be Still, My Soul"
by Catharina von Schlegel, 1697-?
Translated by Jane Borthwick, 1813-1897

1. Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heavenly, Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2. Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

3. Be still, my soul, though dearest friends depart
And all is darkened in the vale of tears;
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrows and thy fears.
Be still, my soul; thy Jesus can repay
From His own fulness all He takes away.

4. Be still, my soul; the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Please Pray - DH job interview tomorrow!

As you may remember, DH was laid off back in March... out of work for two months... and then made the (stressful) decision to try to start his own business with an entrepreneur acquaintance of ours. Well, here we are six months later.... things didn't work out they way they hoped.... so last week, the decision was made to go their separate ways and start looking for "real jobs" (in their words - Lol!). On Thursday, DH looked online and saw there were openings at Best Buy, so he sent in his application. Later that day, he had to go in to make make a return, and not only was Nicky (the hiring coordinator) there.... but she recognized him (from 6months ago, when he tried to get a job there), and said they received his application! - Unfortunately, they are completely staffed... even for teh Christmas holidays. (stupid website wasn't updated). B was just about to leave when he noticed a sign about the new music department they are adding on. Upon his inquiry & some conversation, he discovered they had not even begun to hire for it, yet. B mentioned to Nicky that he plays guitar... and she said she get the girl in charge of hiring for that area in touch with him. Not getting too excited (last time, he many empty promises of calls from the) he thanked her, and we went on our way. Well, the next day... the phone rang, it was Best Buy! After a mini phone interview (though he doesn't have experience with music sales.... he has *lots* of experience with each individually!)... they asked him to come in Thursday (11/23/08) morning for an interview & audition!!

So all this to say... we NEED your thoughts & prayers for tomorrow! We really can't afford to be out of work for even a month this time... let alone longer. (It's already been a week.) The interview is at 11am. Thanx!! - I'll let ya know how it goes!!

Bridesmaid

One of my dearest & closest friends, is getting married.... and I am going to be a bridesmaid! She just asked me tonight!! I am SOO excited!

McCain is coming to town!

I just found out that Arizona senator/presidential candidate John McCain is going to be in town this Thursday... and we're going to see him!! yay!!

Pumpkin Muffins...

One of my favorite things about this time of year, are all the pumpkin flavored foods that come out! Tonight I made these easy & extremely tasty whole wheat pumpkin muffins (original recipe courtesy of HillbillyHousewife...)
Ingredients

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (or canned pumpkin)
  • 1 cup buttermilk or yogurt (I actually used vanilla yogurt)
  • 1/3 cup melted margarine (I used butter or coconut oil, of course!)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar (I used honey, and did a little less than a 1/3 cup, as the yogurt was slightly sweetened, and I wasn't looking for a very sweet muffin)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 medium eggs (or 1 Tbs flax + 3 Tbs water, ground together = one egg)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
Instructions:
Get out a big bowl. Scrape the pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin into the bowl. Add the buttermilk, margarine, sugars, vanilla, eggs, salt and cinnamon. Use your whisk to work everything together until it is well blended. Add the baking soda and flour. Mix again, stirring only until the flour is moistened. Be careful not to over beat, muffin batter should be lumpy. Spoon the batter into well oiled muffin cups. Bake at 350° for about 25 minutes (12 mins for mini-muffins).
This recipe makes about 18 muffins. (40 mini-muffins)
Note: If you buy pumpkin in large cans, you can divide it into cup size portions and freeze it until you need it again. This prevents waste, because you don't have to use the whole can up right away. I usually buy pumpkin in 28 ounce cans, because it is cheaper this way. Although sometimes the 16 ounce cans go on sale around the holidays
Note 2: If you don't have buttermilk, you can use 1 cup milk + 1 Tbs vinegar
Instead of using either white or brown sugar, I replaced both with all honey. - about ½ cup + a little worth. They came out awesome!!

Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today... October 20, 2008

Outside my Window...
It's *beautiful*!! The sun is shining... the current batch of clothes are hanging on the line... a gorgeous breeze is blowing.... and the air smells fresh and crisp. - It's actually cool enough to have all my windows open!

I am thinking... what can I do for my hubby for Christmas??

I am thankful for...
all the fun we had over the weekend... smoothies, fruit stands, lunches with family, and fellowship with friends...

From the kitchen..
I have pureed pumpkin I need to use up... which I am thinking I am going to make into whole wheat pumpkin muffins. We also just go a beautiful spaghetti squash (among other yummy items) at the farmer's market, that I can't wait to use!
And at this moment, DH is in the process of juicing carrots for us! (yum!)

I am wearing... a black camisole... blue gym shorts... plaid apron... hair in a loose ponytail... barefeet.

I am reading...
my script for the church Christmas play (still working on that memorizing... thankfully I was extended a week).... Christmas songs in the hymnal (trying to see which ones can be changed into the key of C and still remain in the one octave...)

I am hoping/praying...
hoping.... I'll get these tables for Christmas...
Praying... DH's interview goes well on Thursday.

I am creating...
ideas for Christmas gifts... Christmas music for bell practice on Weds.

I am hearing...
The birds signing, the wind blow through the trees, the clothes flapping on the line... and law mowers being run, faintly in the distance.

Around the house...
I just love the energy I get when there is fresh air blowing through the house! The baby is bathed.... the laundry is slowly getting washed and rotated on the line... the dishes are mostly washed or in the dishwasher (which was just run)... and I just got back from a nice ride on my new bicycle!!

One of my favorite things...
the fruits (& veggies) of the season... white nectarines, pears, apples, sweet potatoes, squash, sweet corn, and pumpkin!

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...
In-laws coming over tonight to watch a movie.... LEARN Wednesday afternoon... hubby's interview on Thurs morning... [Church] Youth Activity Saturday night... Servant Appreciation Day (at church), Sunday.

Edit (Tues): I just found out we are going to see Presidential Candidate McCain on Thursday afternoon! (cool!)... We might go to the Earthbox place on Saturday morning... and we might get together with JAmes one more time this weekend, before he goes back to CA.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...
KB - getting ready to go on our bike ride a little bit ago...

What's your motive?

Our personal green changes came from our desire to live simple, frugal lives for reasons besides the environment .. besides money even. One of those was not wanting to raise our children as consumers and to instill in them a love of the important things in life - like people, not things - without depriving them of childhood joys.

Stop Global Whining!!

The Right Brothers = awesome! Though the music is a little hard for my taste... I love how their music is a stark contrast to the usual liberal message that dominate the airwaves! They present their bold conservative message with loud guitars and no apologies! They are not afraid to stand up for their values, ethics, and country!! I first heard of them, when they released their song, “BUSH WAS RIGHT”. The pop-punk song, (complete with a video distributed on therightbrothers.com), had everyone either screaming for more or screaming foul. Air America, Fox News, MSNBC, the BBC and talk shows across the country played - and continue to play – the song. Packed with in-your-face lyrics... they give rock and roll a new slant on rebellion – and it’s called Conservatism.

Here's one of their newest songs!! (and yes, I totally agree with it! Don't agree? Go find & watch "The Great Global Warming Swindle" and then get back to me.... Until then.... Stop Global Whining!!

Stop Global Whining
The Right Brothers
written by Frank Highland and Aaron Sain

There's a crisis on the planet
It's heated up almost a whole degree
It hasn't been this hot in a long time
Not since the 16th Century
When there were no evil SUVs

(Chorus)
Stop Global Whining
It's up to you
The earth's been heating up and cooling back down
Since the day it started spinning 'round and 'round
Stop Global Whining
Get your head out of the clouds

His name is Al Gore, yeah he's a loser
He says the blame falls on me and you
He flies around in a private jet
While he tries to sell an inconvenient "truth"
Hey Al here's something you can do

(Repeat Chorus)

Maybe you should shut up Al
Cause every time you talk you're filling up the air
With carbon dioxide too
So if you really think that we'll become extinct
The best thing that you can do is

(Repeat Chorus)

Stop Global Whining
It's up to you
Stop Global Whining
I'm sick and tired of hearing you

KB did SO good with ECing today. She had very few accidents, and even signaled me several times, when she needed to go. Well, really good until tonight. Then it happened. Our first real EC disaster. Now, don't get me wrong... we've had our share of pee-pee cleanups on the hard floor... poopy cleanups on the hard floor... and even a few pee-pee cleanups on the carpet - Those are no big deal. - But tonight we had the worst...
I hear KB fussing, and look down to see she had just had a bad case of the runs... all the way across the carpeted bedroom floor. Apparently something we ate yesterday didn't settle well with us, as I have had a stomach ache & nausea all day today... and now this. I swooped KB into the bathroom, & promptly into the tub.... while DH got out the vinegar water, and started on his way, scrubbing the carpet... and what a job that was - he is so sweet. So now she is out of the tub... all lotioned up (her new obsession. lol!) and is now nursing & falling asleep. So sweet. I love my baby!! (even is she does make stinky messes on the floor sometimes..)

Christmas craft idea!!

I think I've figured it out what I want to do for KB for Christmas!! And it only took a beautiful day, a [free!] Starbucks cappuccino , and some awesome crafting books to figure it all out!
DH was home *all* day... so after stopping in to Best Buy to make a return & check on the job application B put in earlier today.... we spent a good part of the afternoon walking around Barnes & Noble, drinking our coffee (I love coffee!!), and looking at all the fun books. With Christmas coming up quickly, the economy being as it is.... a lot of people seem to be looking for frugal alternatives for Christmas gifts this year. I am especially intrigued by how many people are considering making homemade gifts... which was apparent by all the neat crafty books! Not knowing myself, what I was going to do for KB for Christmas... and not really wanting to get more toys for KB (esp not battery-eating, plastic ones - we're trying to stick to the "simple is better" thing)... I found myself leaning towards also making something. But what? Then I found it, in this book....
Sock and Glove: Creating Charming Softy Friends
from Cast-off Socks and Gloves
by Miyako Kanamori
Publisher: HP Trade
62 pages
ISBN-10: 1557885168
ISBN-13: 978-1557885166

Sock and Glove tells us the story of an old sock and glove and how "Mom" turned them into Billy the dog and Marcus the monkey. Then "Mom" goes a little nuts and makes Rabbit, Bear, Dog #2, Cat, Sheep, Girl, Mouse, Pig, Fish, Panda, Elephant, Zebra, and (my favorite) the little red Bird...
So then I had my idea... what if I made a few of these little birds... and then buy Heather (my wonderful crafty sister) some brown yarn to knit or crochet a "bird's nest"?? So that's my idea... what do you think??Now all I have to do is get the book [oh*twist*my*arm!]... find some red socks... and then figure out something I can do for my hubby!!! -- I am SO excited!!

Shepherds pie...

Last night we were blessed to be given some food... and though most of it was non-pershiables... tucked in the top, was a little 1lbs chub of ground turkey! So tonight for dinner, I made a very simple & delicious Shepherds pie...

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • Garlic powder
  • 1 can cream soup (recipe calls for cream of potato, but I used Onion or mushroom, and it was just as good!)
  • 1 small bag frozen mixed vegetables
  • Mashed potatoes (enough to cover a 9 x 13 pan)
  • Grated Cheese (cheddar, colby, jack… your choice)

Instructions:

Brown turkey on stove top, add onions during the last 3 minutes of cooking, I also season with some garlic powder. Mix turkey and onions with the cream soup. Spray a 9 x 13 pan with nonstick, then spread the turkey mixture in the bottom of the pan. Then layer the corn on top of the turkey, finally spread the mashed potatoes on top of the corn. Bake covered for about 25 minutes @ 350 degrees. During the last 5 minutes of cooking uncover the casserole and sprinkle with grated cheese.

For Today... October 13, 2008

Outside my Window...
It's raining... I love it when it rains... it gives me warmfuzzies... but also makes me sleepy....

I am thinking...
how much she loves the look of the Edwardian Aprons, like they wear on Avonlea... and wonder how hard they would be to make. - They are just so pretty, and practical...

I am thankful for... Not only the Lord's providing for our needs... but also blessing us with a few "wants" as well. ~~~
All things working together for good to them that love (& trust) God!!

From the kitchen...
Saturday I made a Peanut butter/chocolate chip cream pie, which won first place at our church's Country Harvest Day pie bakeoff! ~ For dinner yesterday, I made mexican chicken... very simple & tasty! ~ For lunch I am having homemade hummus... and tonight we are having, Shepard's Pie.. Yum!

I am wearing... ahem... I just got out of the shower.... -- bare feet... definitely bare feet!! ;-)

I am reading...
my script for the church Christmas play - I have a fairly sizeable part, and have to have the lines fairly well memorized by next Sun! (ahh!!)

I am hoping/praying... joy can be found in the midst of disappointment...

I am creating...
ideas on how to best portray my part in the play...

I am hearing...
The rain softly come down against the windows... I love that sound!

Around the house...
In my living room is a self-rigged "clothes rack", with an amazing amount of baby clothes to go the consignment shop. The kitchen is fairly clean.... except for the Cheerios that KB just strew across the kitchen & family room floors! LOL... oh well. I just finished gathering the rest of the laundry from around the house, and need to get it chugging along - which takes time since our dryer is still out... (my clothes line is only so big, and now it's raining!- ah!). I also need to vacuum the carpets... but may wait until right before the meeting on Weds. so they look still nice.

One of my favorite things... blogging! I love being able to share my thoughts & passions in print. (which is funny, because I really despise any other form of writing.. lol!)

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...
Figure out what to do with above said clothes rack, before I host the LaLeche League enrichment meeting (Weds)... I also need to call the consignment shop & see if they are taking consignments.... and check with my MIL's schedule, and then call the chiropractor & see if I can get KB & I an appointment soon. (it's been way too long!). We have a babywearing group (Thurs morning)... and another playtime with Zoe (Sat). I am also hoping to hit the Produce stand sometime Saturday, before James' Bon Voyage Party, Saturday night. Then Sunday, we have our regular sabbath day... including church services, choir practice & Cristmas program practice.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

Some Sunny Sunday afternoon fun...

I love you....

As I was loading KB into the van this morning to go to church, we began having one of our conversations - a common occurrence these days - where I'll say something to her, and with a look of such pride, that she can communicate with her mommy, will babble something back in response! During the course of the conversation, I said "I love you KB". To my surprise, she responded with something which sounded very much like I love you! No way! I say it again.... "lou lou loo" she says... My heart whelms.... my baby girls said I love you!!

ME... Green/Crunchy??

One of the Forums I frequent, recently asked us to fill out this survey....

1. Do you recycle? Yes! Anything & everything I can!

2. Do you do anything to reduce the amount of waste you and your family produces? How about reducing the amount of resources you use? I hardly run the lights during the day, and try to keep things turned off as much as possible.... Have changed most of our light bulbs to Compact Fluorescent... Hang some stuff on the clothesline as an alternative to running the dryer.... Use reusable grocery bags... Clean using natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, etc... EC & cloth diaper (also make/use reusable wipes)... Donate/FreeCycle to pass on items we no longer use or need... Have/use an water ionizer instead of buying bottled water... Reuse glass jars & bottles for drinking & storing water... Buy my clothing second hand... instead of getting my license, I either walk, carpool or just don't go... (I also just got a bike & trailer, so now I can get around that way, too!).... and we hardly use paper towels any more (only for dog/poop messes!)... next to never use paper plates. (we still do use some napkins - but I want to buy some cloth & make some reusable ones - paper is just so convenient!!)....

3. Do you reuse anything to save money or waste? We have reusable grocery bags... we have a reusable coffee filter, instead of using the paper ones... we reuse glass jars & bottles for drinking & storing water.... and I try to use tupperware-type of storage, instead of plastic bags/foil/etc., as much as possible!

4. What is your ecological footprint? Do you think it has changed for the better in the last year? Don't know what it is, but I know it's changed for the better!

5. What kind of impact do you feel the "reduce, reuse, recycle" philosophy has on our lives, if any? On my life, personally, or society in general?? Society in general has become disturbingly blasé about it... but is starting to become a little more aware, as this whole "going green" movement has come about. - Personally, I feel it encourages us to be more prudent & economical with the resources of which we are blessed to have!
...and while reading other peoples responses, and I couldn't believe how many people were so blasé about the subject! Not that I believe in global warming and some of that such nonsense... but because I feel we ought to be more prudent & economical with the resources of which we are blessed to have! God has given us this beautiful earth to live on... and I feel we ought to be better stewards of and take more responsibility for it's care!

The more I thought about it, the more the others' answers really started to bother me - until I stopped & began to think it through...... If you would have asked me a few years ago what my lifestyle would be like now, I would have never categorized myself as being green or crunchy.... A domestic goddess, yes (lol)... an attachment parent, most likely... but crunchy? uh, yeah, what's that?.. a hippie? heh, right.... However, that attitude is really actually quite funny, considering that (without the label)... I was pretty much raised by a AP & crunchy mom. From early on, we were taught the importance of recycling, not littering, good stewardship, frugality, living debt free, living simply & having a strong family unit. We were homeschooled, and taught to cook and sew simple items from a young age. Much of my wardrobe consisted of handmade or hand-me-downs, as Marmee always stressed the importance of $$ and how to stretch a dollar. She wore & breastfed every one of us, and made sure we all knew the benefits of eating a well-balanced meal. We even had times (depending on finances & stages of life) where we did all, most of, or (at least) some of the following:  ate completely healthful & organic.... shopped  exclusively at health food stores rather than  the reg. grocery stores... juiced... made our own bread.... used herbal/natural remedies (pretty much always did that, regardless of our financial state)... used only reusable item (like grocery bags)... and even managed an organic produce coop (and did so for a long time)!

But even though I was naturally implementing many of the things I was raised with (cooking vs eating out, recycling, shopping second-hand, cutting coupons, not spending a lot of money on extravagances, etc.)... I never saw myself as anything more than the average young adult... who was newly married, trying to get on our feet. Then (almost two years later) I got pregnant, and began going the birthing center, to see a midwife for my care. It all went uphill from there. I guess the saying "When you have a baby is changes the way you see the world" is more true than I realized. Throughout my pregnancy, I was reminded of all the wonderful benefits of cloth diapering babywearing, & cosleeping... given some awesome tips... and even learned about some cool new things, like Elimination Communication & some not-so-known methods of wearing your baby - like a wrap or a Mai Tei! Then, after the beautiful homebirth of our daughter, I started attending play groups, LaLeche League Meetings, babywearing groups, & EC meetings... where I found myself being enlightened on issues much deeper than milestones, breastfeeding, ring-slings & having a diaper-free babe. I was being encouraged to research what's in things, and the impact they have on our daily lives. From shoes to plastics - cleaning to health... I have had an increasing conviction & interest in living more eco-friendly, and am finding (even a year later), the education is endless if you're willing to listen & learn!

And now, as I proceed down the road of this incredible journey... I am on a quest to discover even more practical changes (read: not extravagant - though I hope to be able to make the switch someday.... right now [unfortunately] we can't afford all new Energy Star appliances or a new, hybrid vehicle) we can make, to adapt our lifestyle to not only being economical, but also more healthful. - Some of the things I would love to begin using/implementing are: Cloth napkins, Frequenting more of the local fruit stands, starting our own vegetable/herb garden & compost pile, Get a machine & start sewing a little (things like cloth napkins!), begin regularly making our bread (& maybe even pastas - that would be cool!), and using even more alternative & healthful ingredients when cooking & baking.

Organic Candy...

I just found out about this company that sell Organic candy! The company is called Pure Fun Organic Candy... it's products are made exclusively in Canada and the US... and have built a fine reputation for what is NOT found in their candy: NO Gluten, NO GMO'S, NO FD&C Colors, NO Casein, NO Dairy, NO artificial flavors, NO dyes, NO Synthetics, NO Pesticides, NO preservatives…nothing but Pure Fun. BUT they do have good stuff IN them to: organic cane juice, organic brown rice syrup, and natural colors derived from great stuff like red beet concentrate, alfalfa extract, red cabbage, annatto, and other yummy fruits and vegetables. They come in many different flavors and candy types….fruit rocks, pure pops, fruit pinwheels, citrus slices, chocolate meltdowns, candy canes, and root beer barrels, to name a few.

I wouldn't give any to KB yet... but it's good to know it exists for if I ever want an alternative, away from all the the high fructose corn syrups, coloring, preservatives, etc.
